Ethan had always felt alone. At school, he watched groups of boys laughing together, playing games, and sharing inside jokes while he sat by himself. He wanted to join them, but every time he thought about walking over, doubt stopped him.
What if they didn't want him there?
As the months passed, Ethan grew used to sitting alone. He told himself he didn't need friends, but deep down, he wished someone would notice him.
One afternoon during recess, Ethan sat quietly on a bench while the playground buzzed with activity. He watched other students running around, laughing with their friends.
Then he heard someone call his name.
"Hey, Ethan!"
He looked up and saw a group of boys standing nearby. Several hands were reaching out toward him, inviting him to come over.
Ethan's heart pounded. Part of him wanted to stay where he was, afraid of being embarrassed. But another part of him was tired of feeling invisible.
After a moment of hesitation, he stood up and reached out his hand.
That single decision changed everything. Over the next few weeks, Ethan became friends with the boys. They played together at recess, sat together at lunch, and worked together on school projects.
For the first time in a long while, Ethan felt like he belonged.
One day, while walking across the playground, he noticed another boy sitting alone on the same bench where he used to sit. The boy stared at the ground, just as Ethan once had.
Without thinking, Ethan walked over and held out his hand.
"Want to hang out with us?" he asked.
The boy smiled and stood up. As they walked toward Ethan's friends, Ethan realized how much a simple act of kindness could change someone's life.
